Paris Hilton and a Game of Poker

People have lost and won many interesting things during a hand of poker.  On the sad, depraved side of things, we read stories of men betting their wives or their children in poker games…and losing.  On the high-stakes, yet not quite as bad as a living person side of things, we hear about people losing big-ticket items, like houses, cars, or high-priced electronics.

In May of 2006 there was a hiccup of news that circulated on the internet about Paris Hilton and a game of poker at her family’s casino.  The casino, located in Las Vegas, boasts extravagant villas, a world-class spa, celebrity entertainment (hello, Liza Minnelli), and a very popular casino.  Paris Hilton was playing poker in the casino (in one of the private rooms, no doubt), and lost a $189,000 Bentley.

Online poker site PartyPoker decided to offer Hilton a deal – if she went up against Mike Sexton, World Poker Tour host, in a game of Texas Hold’em, they’d give her a brand new Continental GT.  Obviously, the heiress could afford to buy her own new car, so she didn’t take the site up on their offer.  Hilton, who had bragged repeatedly about being great at poker, probably did not want to take the chance of getting shown up publically.

Ironically, after Hilton got a new  Bentley, it was vandalized, and PartyPoker made her the same offer.  She, again, did not take them up on it, but she did play in 2009’s World Poker Tournament Celebrity Invitational, but it was for charity. She, along with Vince Vaughn, Ben Affleck, Mena Suvari, Ray Romano, and others, sat down to play poker for The Vine Group, a charity that provides textbooks and other learning materials to schools in Africa, and also offers educational scholarships to students who might not otherwise be able to attend school.
